Reflections from Colorado’s 14ers is a devotional series shaped by time spent hiking Colorado’s highest peaks. Through each climb, I reflect on the ways God meets us in creation and invites us to slow down, pay attention, and remember His faithfulness.

Huron Peak

Whenever we’re asked about our favorite 14er climb, it’s always a tough question to answer. The typical response, however, is Huron Peak. Wildflowers abound in its alpine meadows, and it boasts dramatic, panoramic summit views. However, that’s not exactly what makes it our favorite. This mountain inspired reflection. Resting on the top of Huron, I began to think about life’s experiences. I reflected on how God has worked directly in my life through the good, the bad, and everything in between. As stunning as the summit was, I couldn’t help but become overwhelmed by the emotion of remembering God’s goodness and provision.

How often do we miss the forest for the trees?

As humans, bound by the temporal, we often allow our current situation to dictate our overall outlook and perspective. If things are going well, then great—no need to worry! On the contrary, we tend to let negative experiences fester into stress, anxiety, doubt, or pessimism. It’s inevitable in this life that trials will come; this is simply the nature of a fallen world. Despite our circumstances, Scripture reminds us to reflect on who God is and the promise of hope, comfort, peace, joy, and love we can find in Him.

“And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.”

Romans 8:28

Reflection Questions

  • You may be going through a difficult time or season currently. Meditate and pray through Romans 8:28. What is God saying to you at this moment?

  • Reflect on past experiences. What are some specific ways you have seen God at work in your life? How can this help to encourage and strengthen you in the present and future?
