Reflections from Colorado’s 14ers is a devotional series shaped by time spent hiking Colorado’s highest peaks. Through each climb, I reflect on the ways God meets us in creation and invites us to slow down, pay attention, and remember His faithfulness.

Reflections from Colorado’s 14ers: Grays Peak

This was my first 14er attempt. We started off excited, though unprepared, and ready for a challenge. A few miles in, my enthusiasm was replaced with exhaustion, and optimism quickly turned into thoughts of turning around. I began to question whether the summit was really worth it. I could see amazing mountain views all around me and had already accomplished a significant physical feat.

But we kept pushing.

The final summit approach was steep. As I placed my feet on the top of the mountain, the most amazing view came into focus. I had no idea what I would have been missing if I had turned back.

I began to wonder; how many other summits does Jesus have set in front of me that I miss because of complacency? How often do I convince myself to settle for “good enough” when God has the “best ever” just ahead?

This experience was transformational for me. Not only because it was my first mountain summit, but because it’s a moment I have committed to remembering. When I am struggling, I go back to this moment and remember the awe-inspiring power and goodness of God.

“I will give thanks to you, Lord, with all my heart;

I will tell of all your wonderful deeds.”

Psalm 9:1

Reflection Questions

  • Where in your life are you tempted to settle for “good enough”?

  • What promises has God given you to encourage you to keep pushing?

  • Spend some time thinking about the “summits” you’ve experienced. How was God’s glory on display?

  • How does remembering His goodness empower you to face what’s ahead?
